WISDOM AND GRIT: AN ODE TO RESILIENCE
Ages 16-29
Fall 2023, Afrikan Youth Alchemy

In this creative documentary workshop student fellows will make image-based essays that celebrate Baltimore people, community initiatives, or neighborhoods that exhibit resilience in the face of challenges.  These challenges might be social or personal, to do with race, class, gender, health, or family situation.  Each fellow will identify and explore a subject that’s meaningful to them, reporting on their subject, and also addressing why they find the “wisdom and grit” they encounter inspiring.  They won’t turn away from the negative in the realities they take on, but they’ll be challenged to drill through to the affirmative.  They’ll create video projects that might incorporate both still and moving images, testimony, interviews, and voice over based in their own writing.  In a supportive, collaborative setting, they’ll work with each other and with instructors to refine and polish individual short films.  Their work will be shared on the program website and at a public exhibition.  Limited to 10 student fellows.

Wisdom and Grit: An Ode to Resilience is a co-production of Baltimore Youth Film Arts and Griot Works, a program of Afrikan Youth Alchemy.
