FINDING THE STORY IN SOUND
Ages 16-29
Summer 2022, Online

In this workshop, storytelling will begin with sound: traffic, bird song, gossip on the stoop; wind, rain, footsteps; creaking swings, hammering from a construction site.  Relying first on their ears, student fellows will explore their environments, listening for how, as well as what, their worlds communicate.  They’ll record a wide range of audio, then develop stories from what they discover, capturing moving and still images, building visual narratives made dimensional by rich soundtracks. For inspiration, they’ll study short sounds films with no dialogue.  They’ll learn the basics of audio recording, script creation, shooting, and editing, building professional storytelling skills by shaping stories from their own points of view.  Each fellow will end with an audiovisual masterpiece they can be proud of.  Their work will be shared at a public exhibition and on the program website.  Limited to 8 student fellows.
