DOC ARTS: CREATIVE DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING
Ages 16-29
Spring 2023, Online

In this online workshop, student fellows will explore creative techniques in nonfiction digital storytelling.  They’ll experiment with still and motion photography, poetry, animation, and with fresh approaches to sound, color, and narrative design, expanding their understanding of both the documentary form and of their chosen subject matter, while shaping an emotionally impactful experience for an audience.  They’ll view and analyze the work of established documentary filmmakers, drawing inspiration from masters and innovators.  And they’ll draw inspiration also from each other, pitching concepts, sharing stories and production plans within the workshop group.  Each fellow will create a short documentary grounded in personal experience and using original materials.  They’ll learn videography basics, both technical and aesthetic, as well as the fundamentals of non-fiction storytelling, such as pre-production, including research; interviewing skills and writing and recording voice overs; video editing; and sound design.  Their work will be shared on the program website and at a public exhibition.  Limited to 9 student fellows.
