VOICES OF THE ELDERS: MEMORY, COMMUNITY, & HISTORY

In this online workshop, student fellows will engage with elders in their families and from their communities to gather oral histories, connecting remotely to their subjects as needed, while social distancing guidelines evolve. Histories might be personal stories or family stories handed down, and might be tied to Baltimore or to any location the storyteller hails from. The project will mine the past, recording what might otherwise be forgotten, even as it affirms and forges new ties between generations. Fellows will learn to conduct productive, respectful interviews--advance preparation, open-ended questions, active listening; to log content for possible future use in documentary storytelling, identifying particular points of interest. Fellows will create short videos, using original images, both moving and still, and their work will be shared on the website and through a virtual exhibition. Limited to 12 student fellows.
Voices of the Elders is a co-production of Baltimore Youth Film Arts and Griot Works, a program of Afrikan Youth Alchemy.
Ras Tre Subira is Founding Director of Griot's Eye and Afrikan Youth Alchemy.
Babatunde E. Salaam is a filmmaker, instructor, and program director with Griot’s Eye, a media program in Baltimore serving the cultural and creative needs of urban youth. He has produced shorts exploring narratives of youth entrepreneurship, education, and the prison industrial complex.
